When you receive public subsidies for medical care costs

Depending on the age and illness of the patient receiving medical care, there are schemes available in which the national government, prefectural government, municipality, etc. pays part or all of the medical care costs with public expenditure.
The Health Insurance Society automatically pays Additional Benefits to persons whose cost-sharing amount for medical care costs exceeds a certain amount, but—because medical care costs related to infant medical care, child medical care for persons of age 18 or younger, chronic specified children's diseases and disorders, the specified disease and disorder medical expense subsidy system for incurable and special diseases, the independence support medical care system, etc. are covered in whole or in part as public expenditures, we do not automatically pay benefits in these cases.
If someone who undergoes medical care paid for by public expenditures also receives insurance benefits from the Health Insurance Society, these benefits overlap, so that person will have to refund the medical care costs covered by health insurance at a later date.
If you are receiving public subsidies for medical care costs, please submit the “Notification of Eligibility for the Medical Care Cost Subsidy Scheme” to the Health Insurance Society. In addition, please notify the Health Insurance Society if the medical care certificate is updated, the indicated details change, or the period ends. Also contact us if you do not receive subsidies from your local government.
